THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS FURNISHED AS CLOSING ACTION FOR THIS PROJECT:
Project Title: MP-18 Mobile Column Lift Systems,
and a Model TD1000 Hi-Rise Tire Dolly.
Project Dates: Nov 00-Nov 01.
Project Monitor: ACC Activity.
Equipment Evaluated: Mohawk MP-18 Mobile Column
Lifts w/optional High-Rise Jack Stands and TD1000 Hi-Rise Wheel Dolly
Project Results: The above equipment was evaluated
by a Red Horse unit at an Air Force base that specializes in heavy equipment
repair. Technicians at the test base, vehicle maintenance flight, used
the Mobile Column Lifts weekly to accomplish jobs such as transmission
work, remove fuel tanks, oil and filter changes, steering component
maintenance and tire removal and replacement. The optional Hi-Rise Jack
Stands were only used when the Column Lifts were needed in another bay
or shop. The Jack Stands were also used on other types of maintenance
such as supporting heavy forklifts arms during hydraulic system repairs.
The optional TD1000 Hi-Rise Tire Dolly was used to remove large wheels
for tire replacement and also used to remove large wheel and hub assemblies
during wheel bearing and brake repair. The Mobile Column Lifts were
a shop morale booster, every technician that used them like them, simply
put, these lifts are designed to help a shop work smarter instead of
harder. All the equipment performed exceptionally well as the manufacturer
advertised with no safety or operational problems encountered.
NOTE: A great feature of the MP-18 Column Lifts
is the optional fork truck lift pads and approach ramps that will allow
2 columns to service fork trucks with wheels hanging free.
Also the optional automotive frame contact pads for use
with 2 columns, which gives you added lift capability for cars and light
trucks.
Advantages:
a. The MP-18 Mobile Lift provides the shop a lift that can be stored
when not in use, a feature that frees up valuable floor space.
b. The lifts are mobile and can be taken to the vehicle instead of vehicle
brought to lift.
c. The lifts can be operated independently.
d. No more drive on ramps as with traditional fixed or stationary, the
Mobile Column Lifts frees up space between the vehicles wheels allowing
free movement of transmission jacks and waste oil buggies.
e. The lifts allow the user to compensate for differences in wheelbase,
whereas a fixed lift has a standard set of limitations on the lengths
and widths of vehicles it can accommodate.
f. The lifts can easily be transported to a deployed location and requires
no set-up; all you need is the proper power source.
g. These Mobile Lifts provide deployable units with a lift capability
anytime and anywhere.
h. Another great feature of these lifts are the adjustable forks that
accommodate the widest range of wheels from 13" up to 24"
for easy use with floatation tires or tires up to 48" diameter
(standard model). Made to fit smaller tires vehicles without adapters
or reducer sleeves.
i. The Hi-Rise Jack Stands telescope from 30" to 75" and have
an internal spring assist which easily allows raising and lowering the
stands into position, you actually have to apply light pressure to retract
them to the down position eliminating the chance of pinched fingers
or hands.
j. The Hi-Rise Tire Dolly used in conjunction with the column lifts
easily allows technicians to remove wheels/hubs to perform brake work
or tire changes without ever bending over.
Disadvantages: Each time the Mobile Column Lifts are used you
have to reposition them which requires approximately 5 feet of space
on each side of the vehicle to maneuver into position, however they
can be pushed into place and ready for use in less than 10 minutes.
The disadvantage experienced is minor and may appear to be time consuming,
however this disadvantage is far outweighed with the mobile capability
and especially with the non-restricted wheelbase that the lifts will
accommodate.
Final MEEP Action: Based on the test results, the "MP-18
Mohawk Column Lifts w/optional Hi-Rise Jack Stands and the TD-1000
Tire Dolly" was recommended for Air Force use and adoption. Also
it is recommended that the MP-18 Mohawk Column Lift be assigned a
National Stock Number and added to AS 457 with a BOI of one set of
four per vehicle maintenance flight. The TD-1000 Wheel Dolly and Hi-Rise
Jack Stands should be coded local purchase. Project Closed.
